Rumors say the Gobblers are kidnapping children and taking them to the bitter cold north to separate them from their daemons and experiment on them with a mysterious substance called "Dust."
Lyra embarks on a journey to save her friend Roger, whom she believes has been snatched by the Gobblers. She is aided along the way by Gyptians, witches, polar bears and aeronauts on her quest to free Roger and the other missing children. This leads her to the discovery of Dust, and the many other dimensions and worlds outside of her own. The boundaries between worlds are dissolving and the Specters that consume adult souls are spreading. Can Lyra and her friend Will stop the destruction?
For grades 8 and up.

Okay, this may be my favorite all-time series of books. This is one I've read a few times - once my eyes and several other times as a recorded book. The recorded book is out of this world! The narration is read by Pullman himself, and all the characters are performed by an amazing cast of British actors. I think every word is there except the "he said's" and "she said's." This series is full of adventure, mystery, playfulness, wisdom, philosophy, themes lifted from classic literature and religion, devotion, outrage, courage, and inventiveness. What I loved most about it is that Pullman is a master storyteller; you can just put yourself in his hands, let him take you where he will go, and trust that the journey and the destination will be totally satisfying. I don't like to give anything away at all (not even the notion of daemons) because one of the experiences I most enjoyed with this series was the process of discovery as Pullman revealled, rather than told you, about a world in which such things were just part of the fabric of living. So just trust, lift the cover, enter, and take the ride!
